My philosophy of teaching
It is my belief that a teacher's role is to support children to be active and powerful contributors to their own learning. I encourage my students to be independent, reflective and to develop critical thinking skills. I support learning by connecting to prior knowledge, using the interests of students to direct learning experiences and by recognising the array of cultural capital students bring to the classroom.
I believe that it is important for a teacher to create a supportive learning environment where each child is respected and individual needs are taken into consideration. Students are encouraged to take managed risks and to build resilience. I work hard to help each student realise their physical, cognitive and socio-emotional potential by providing a safe, but challenging, learning environment.
I hold high expectations for my students and strongly believe that each individual has the ability to learn. I expect every student to demonstrate enthusiasm and effort and I do the same. In my classroom I support the specific learning needs of students by scaffolding and extending as required. I also ensure equitable adjustments are made to support full participation by students with disabilities.
I believe that to create an optimal environment for learning, effective classroom management strategies must be implemented by the teacher. Such strategies include positive reinforcement, clear routines and procedures, in addition to consistency and fairness. My students are encouraged to be respectful and cooperative and to develop self-regulation skills.
I believe that when students feel good about themselves they are more likely to achieve success at school. Students feel good about themselves when a teacher helps them build confidence in their abilities and allows them to feel a sense of control over their educational journey. In the words of Dr. Seuss, "You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose."
